Software Architecture Consulting.
Software architecture reviews, system design and scalability planning for products that outgrew their first build, with a written plan your team can act on.
Software architecture consulting is an outside review and redesign of how a system is structured (its services, data, integrations and infrastructure) so it can carry the next stage of growth without slowing down, breaking or costing more than it should. EqualPixels runs architecture reviews and system design for SaaS platforms, marketplaces and internal systems, and the same engineers can build what they recommend.
What is software architecture, and why does it matter?
Architecture is the set of decisions that are expensive to change later: how data is stored and separated between customers, how the parts of the system talk to each other, where work runs in the background, and how the whole thing is deployed. Get them right and new features are cheap. Get them wrong and every release risks breaking something unrelated.
Most products do not need a grand redesign. They need a handful of specific fixes, made in the right order, by someone who has run similar systems in production.
When do you need an architecture review?
- Pages slow down as data grows
- Queries that were fine at a thousand rows time out at a million.
- Every release breaks something unrelated
- The codebase has no clear boundaries, so changes leak.
- Cloud bills grow faster than revenue
- Usually from over-provisioning, chatty services or uncached paid APIs.
- You are adding customers, regions or a SaaS tier
- Multi-tenancy, data isolation and localisation are hard to retrofit.
- You are about to raise or sell
- Investors and acquirers will run technical due diligence; better to know the findings first.
- Your team is debating microservices
- Before splitting anything, it pays to know whether the problem is really the architecture.
Architecture services we offer
Architecture and code review
A two to three week review of your codebase, database, infrastructure and delivery pipeline, ending in a written report with findings ranked by risk and effort, and diagrams of the system as it is.
System design for new products
Data model, tenancy model, service boundaries, integration points, background processing and hosting, written down and diagrammed before the first sprint, so the build starts on decisions rather than assumptions.
Scalability and performance planning
Load profiling, query and index optimisation, caching strategy, queue design and capacity planning for the traffic you expect next year, not just today.
Multi-tenant SaaS architecture
Single-database or database-per-tenant isolation, per-tenant configuration, feature modules and billing, designed so one customer can never see another’s data. See SaaS development.
Cloud architecture and cost review
Right-sizing on AWS or your own servers, CI/CD pipelines, atomic deployments, backups and observability, with a cost model that shows where each dollar goes.
AI system architecture
Where language models, retrieval and agents fit in an existing system: provider abstraction, logging and metering of every model call, guardrails, and evaluation. See AI integration services.
Monolith or microservices: which should you choose?
For most products under a few dozen engineers, a well-structured modular monolith is faster to build, cheaper to run and easier to debug than microservices. Split out a service when one part genuinely needs to scale, deploy or fail independently, not because the architecture diagram looks more modern.
| Modular monolith | Microservices | |
|---|---|---|
| Team size it suits | One to a few teams | Many independent teams |
| Deployment | One release | Many releases, coordinated |
| Operational cost | Low | High: networking, tracing, versioning |
| Debugging | One stack trace | Distributed tracing across services |
| Independent scaling | Limited | Per service |
We wrote a longer guide on this decision: Monolithic vs microservices, the 2026 decision guide.
How does an architecture review work?
- Goals and constraintsA kickoff with founders and engineers: growth targets, pain points, budget and the deadlines that matter.
- Read-only accessTo the repositories, database schema, infrastructure and monitoring. We never change production during a review.
- Map the systemDiagrams at the context, container and component levels, using the C4 model, so everyone shares one picture.
- MeasureSlow queries, error rates, deployment frequency, cloud spend and test coverage, so findings rest on numbers, not opinions.
- Report and roadmapFindings ranked by risk and effort, with a sequenced plan. We use the pillars of the AWS Well-Architected Framework as a checklist, whatever your host.
- WalkthroughA session with your team to go through every recommendation and answer questions. Implementation is optional.
Architecture patterns we run in production
These are decisions from systems we built and still operate, not slideware:
- Single-database multi-tenancy with enforced scopes
- Every company’s rows share tables, separated by a tenant id and a global scope, with tests that fail if a new model skips isolation (Odobase).
- An outbox for side effects
- Customer messages and third-party calls are recorded as events in the same transaction and relayed after commit, so a retry never sends twice (Odobase).
- One posting engine for money
- Only one module writes the general ledger, inside the same transaction as the document that caused it, and corrections reverse rather than edit (Agenso).
- Shadow mode before cutover
- A new subsystem runs beside the old one until integrity checks pass, then switches in one locked transaction (Agenso).
- Budgets on paid APIs
- Daily tallies and caching on every billable maps and data API, so usage is designed in rather than discovered on the bill.
How much does a software architecture review cost?
A focused architecture review typically starts at about $3,000 and takes two to three weeks. System design for a new platform, or a review of a large multi-service system, is usually $6,000 to $15,000. The fee covers the report, diagrams and walkthrough; implementation is quoted separately if you want us to build it.

Odobase: fleet operations for car rental
Odobase runs six surfaces on six hostnames from one Laravel codebase, with single-database multi-tenancy, an outbox for customer messages and daily budgets on every paid API.

What does a software architecture review include?
A review of your codebase, database, infrastructure and delivery pipeline, measured against your growth goals. You get diagrams of the system as it is, findings ranked by risk and effort, and a sequenced roadmap, plus a walkthrough with your team.
Should I use microservices or a monolith?
For most products under a few dozen engineers, a well-structured modular monolith is faster to build and cheaper to run. Split out a service only when one part genuinely needs to scale, deploy or fail on its own.
How much does an architecture review cost?
A focused review typically starts at about $3,000 and takes two to three weeks. System design for a new platform, or a review of a large multi-service system, is usually $6,000 to $15,000.
How long does an architecture review take?
Two to three weeks for most products: a few days of access and measurement, a week of analysis, then the report and walkthrough.
Do you need access to our production systems?
Read-only access to repositories, the database schema, infrastructure configuration and monitoring is enough. We never change production during a review.
Which cloud platforms do you design for?
AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, DigitalOcean and your own Ubuntu servers. We pick by reliability, cost and what your team can operate, not by habit.
Can you build the system after designing it?
Yes. The engineers who design the architecture can build it in two-week sprints with weekly demos, or hand the plan to your own team with support while they implement it.
